You Could Lose 20-30 Pounds in Only 6 Weeks in Huntington*
Are you getting more and more uncomfortable in your own clothing? Are you tired of doing hours of cardio with minimal to no results in your body composition? Do you find that no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to get the weight off?
Well guess what- you are not alone. The percentage of adults in the United States classified as being overweight or obese (BMI > 25) has risen from 50% in the 1980's to over 70% today and is continually growing. The age groups most affected are those who are 40-59 years old.
Being overweight and obese impacts the physical, chemical and emotional well-being of an individual. In fact, 85% of all health issues are conditions that are either directly or indirectly related to a person being overweight of obese. Did you know that 75% of every one dollar spent on health care relates to conditions that are all caused by obesity. This is a health epidemic and a health crisis and must stop now.
Do you know if you fall into the overweight/obesity category? If you don't know your BMI (body mass index), please do the following calculations right now.
- Record your weight
- Multiply your weight (in pounds) by 703
- Divide that number by your height (in inches)
- Divide by your height (in inches) once more
The end number you get from these calculations is your BMI. If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are considered underweight. If your BMI is 18.5-24.9 then you are in the "normal" range, if your BMI is 25-29.9 then you are considered overweight and if your BMI is 30 or above than you are classified as obese.
What Is Causing Your Weight Gain in Huntington?
Now, despite what you may think, not all weight gain is due to over eating and under exercising. If that were true than we would all just be able to lose weight easily with eating less and exercising more but this is not the case. Stress plays a major role. Most people are overweight due to imbalances in their stress hormones, particularly cortisol. When Cortisol is released in response to stress, it causes changes to how the body can metabolize glucose which we need in times of acute stress however, when under chronic stress (which most of us are under every day), this becomes problematic.
We have a system called the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal-Thyroid Axis (HPAT axis) which is our central stress response system. It is the connection between the central nervous system and the endocrine system and to go into detail about it would be extremely complicated and I can guarantee that you would probably stop reading now if I did. All you really need to understand is that chronic stress (from any sources- chemical, physical, emotional, traumatic, mental etc) causes pathology and dysregulation of the HPAT axis due to the release of excessive cortisol. This increases the risk of developing insulin resistance and raises the blood sugar, changes appetite, decreases the ability to burn fat and increases the rate at which fat is stored.
The key to reversing this cascading set of events is to reset the stalled metabolism and nutritionally support the HPAT axis which will aid in the appropriate hormone production and regulation. In addition, following a specific eating program will teach people how to shop, prepare and consume the appropriate types and amounts of food to aid weight loss that is long-term and promotes improved overall health and reduces inflammation in the body.
